Dynamic Columns

  • Code77 1 week, 6 days ago

    Hello,
We are evaluating Active Report 11 to determine if by using Active Reports we can produce a Catalog from an XML Data Source where the number of columns can change per sub category / table. To clarify I have attached both an Xml document as a data source example and a picture of what we want to accomplish.
I have tried several approaches but most have fallen short of the goal so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello,

With ActiveReports you can create a report at run time and add fields in code. I have created a report using the XML data file provided by you and it shows adding columns in code. Please have a look at the attached sample application.

    Thanks,

Thanks Deepak for the example although I was hoping for a more general approach as in using BandedLists, Tables, etc. to solved the problem domain and not so code heavy. With that aside, I am still a little puzzled at how to apply your solution given the hierarchical nature of the Xml. Can you slightly elaborate on your example to display some of the real columns and their data?

Also, any thoughts on how to handle Foot Notes?

    Thanks!

@Code77, Out of curiosity, is there any specific reason why the columns are right aligned in your example image? I am wondering if the layout of the columns being aligned in such a manner has a business use-case.

I would love to see the example image with some business data to understand the scenario in more detail.

    Hello Bhupesh,
There is no business constraint with regards to the alignment of the columns although some would be monetary in nature so a right align would be appropriate. If you are referring to the overall alignment of the columns it is for aesthetics and that is driven by the business/designer folks.
Although I cannot share an image that includes business data since that is confidential I can bring the example closer to a real world example. Please see the attached files. Hope this helps in clarifying our scenario.

    Hello,
Any suggestions on how to proceed? I can understand if Active Reports is not the correct solution for the scenario given(XML Hierarchy, Dynamic Columns and Foot Notes). Please let me know if it is possible.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Hello,

Our developers are working on this issue and would like to know if there is a limit on Columns for this report?

    Thanks,
    Deepak Sharma

Theoretically no, pragmatically I would say yes. With a letter page size (8.5 x 11.5), we have found that if we set the Product column (1st column) to a fixed size then let the content wrap we can fit about 12 -14 columns and still remain easy to view. If we go beyond that we tend to reduce the font size to accommodate additional columns.

If we need to have a limit I would opt for 14.

    Thanks again!
